Program Details

The BA (Honors) in Humanities and Social Sciences (BAHSS) at Navrachana University is an interdisciplinary program that provides a strong foundation in Psychology and Economics, along with exposure to diverse subjects. The program emphasizes a balanced mix of theory and practical learning, integrating case studies, project work, presentations, assignments, and written exams. With a mandatory internship, students gain hands-on experience, applying their knowledge in real-world settings. This dynamic approach equips graduates with analytical, research, and problem-solving skills, preparing them for careers in diverse sectors and higher studies in their chosen specialization. 

The Bachelor’s degree program is divided into Mandatory courses like Core courses and Major courses, Discipline specific electives, University electives and University Foundations, Ability Enhancement courses and Skill Enhancement courses. Along with these courses the program also encompasses Internship and Project work related to the field of specialization. The elective area serves to acquire additional technical, interdisciplinary, and professional skills. Elective modules can be chosen from the entire range of Courses offered across NUV.   

The Bachelor of Humanities and Social Science (BAHSS) is designed to equip students with a profound understanding of the fundamental principles and practical applications within the field of Humanities and Social Sciences. Rooted in a multidisciplinary approach, the curriculum is meticulously structured to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, thereby preparing graduates for diverse career trajectories in academia, industry, and research.  

The core courses form the bedrock of the program, providing students with a solid grounding in essential areas such as Foundations of Psychology, History, Indian Constitution, Economics, Urban Development and Philosophy. These foundational courses lay the groundwork for a deeper exploration of specialized tracks, allowing students to tailor their academic journey based on individual interests and career aspirations.  

 

Within the specialized tracks, students can choose from two distinct pathways: Psychology and Economics. The program places a strong emphasis on field specific practical learning through Internships and field specific Project work in collaboration with faculty and/or NGOs or Industry Partners. Inclusion of choice-based electives / minors in History, Political Science, Law, etc. allows students to further tailor their education by selecting topics and courses that align with their specific interest for professional growth.  

  

A series of seminars on innovative topics in Psychology and Economics provides students with exposure to the latest developments and contemporary applications in the field. Annual cultural and sports festival along with other academic and co-curricular activities contribute towards holistic development of students. Complementing the academic curriculum is a focus on professional development, including career development workshops, networking events with industry professionals, and optional internships. The program also incorporates a mobility window, providing opportunities for international collaboration or participation in exchange programs.  

Graduates emerge from the program with a solid foundation in Humanities and Social Sciences, specialized expertise in their chosen track, and the practical skills necessary for success in the dynamic and evolving landscape of Humanities and Social Sciences along with the development of civic sense.

BA (Hons) Humanities and Social Science (BAHSS) offers specializations in two major areas, namely;   

  1. Psychology  
  1. Economics  

The student can select any of the above specialization at the beginning of second year.

Choice-based Curriculum

Navrachana University, a premier university in Vadodara, known for its innovative and forward-looking approaches to education has now implemented a choice-based curriculum for its students. It is aimed at transforming the student learning experience, empowering them to “tailor-make” their own degree.

The need of the hour today is to create highly skilled professionals who possess a broad-based outlook enabling them to collaborate, understand and empathize with larger sociocultural realities.

  • Choice-based curriculum empowers students to choose 10% of course credits of their choice from other domains.
  • The mandatory courses of one domain will become the elective courses in other domains.
  • For instance, a student of Engineering can study Architecture and Design courses and vice versa.

Minor discipline courses

Navrachana University offers its students’ the opportunity to pursue a Minor discipline along with their major degree program, following one’s interest, which facilitates the growth of additional skills. Minors are a means of diversifying the understanding of a topic and a reflection of who one is as an individual. For example, a student of Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) can choose a minor in ‘Interior Design’.

To attain a Minor, the students will need to do 18 credit worth of courses designated to diversify interests and gain a professional edge!

KHOJ winter school program

The Khoj program has been one of the defining social immersion activities at Navrachana University. Conceived right during the inception of the University, the Khoj program was envisaged to be a vehicle to inculcate social awareness, empathy, and interdisciplinary skills among our students, with a larger aim of proposing solutions to societal problems through innovation, it is through intense, rigorous, and field-based activities that students come up with an increased sense of empathy and awareness towards their surroundings. This program was further strengthened by engaging on topics that are relevant and can be made visible to society at large, the program is conceived as a larger and more ambitious activity that is undertaken by students and faculty members during the semester break under the umbrella of KHOJ WINTER SCHOOL.

The BA (Honors) in Humanities and Social Sciences (BAHSS) program incorporates multiple credit-based, hands-on internships to provide students with practical exposure and industry-relevant experience. 

  • Community Internship (End of 1st Year) – Understanding societal challenges is crucial for well-rounded professionals. Students engage in a one-month full-time social internship with NGOs or CSR departments of companies, gaining firsthand experience in socio-developmental issues. 
  • Discipline-Specific Internship (End of 2nd Year) – As students’ progress in their academic journey, they are required to undertake an eight-week specialization-specific internship that aligns with their chosen area of study. This internship serves as a bridge between theoretical learning and practical application, offering students an opportunity to engage with real-world challenges in their respective fields. Those specializing in Psychology may intern at mental health clinics, counseling centers, HR departments, or educational institutions, gaining experience in psychological assessments, counseling techniques, or behavioral research. Meanwhile, students focusing on Economics may intern in research organizations, financial institutions, or corporate firms, where they can apply their knowledge of economic trends, data analysis, and policy evaluation. This hands-on experience not only deepens subject knowledge but also enhances critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional skills, making students industry-ready upon graduation. 
  • Final Internship/Entrepreneurship/Dissertation (8th Semester) – A six-month internship/entrepreneurship/dissertation in the final semester allows students to gain in-depth professional exposure, preparing them for career advancement.  

Students undertake a research-based dissertation during the 8th semester, guided by a domain expert, enabling them to develop analytical and research skills essential for academia, policymaking, and industry roles. 

Admission Process

Candidates seeking admission to the BAHSS Program should have passed Higher Secondary School Certification or any other recognized examination considered equivalent to HSC in any stream with minimum 50% marks

Selection of the candidates for admission to the Program would be HSC%, followed by Evaluation of SOP (Statement of Purpose) and Personal Interaction.  

Weightage for HSc %, SOP, and Personal Interview is in proportion of 50%, 10% and 40%, respectively.  

Candidates are required to write a SOP answering the following two questions.  

a) Why the candidate desires to apply for BA Program 

b) Why the candidate desires to take admission in Navrachana University 

The minimum word limit is 150 and the Maximum is 500  

Candidates are expected to express their opinions with full integrity and originality.  Weightage 10%. 

 

Personal Interaction  

The interaction shall comprise of Self Introduction and Questions related to Current Affairs, Courses studied in HSC and Opinion on relevant Contemporary Socioeconomic, Political and International Issues. Weightage 50% 

Limited number of Merit Scholarships are available to meritorious students with a score of over 70% marks in HSc exam. These scholarships are offered to students whose parent’s combined income does not exceed Rs 8 lakh per year. Interested candidates must meet Admin Department after seeking admission.

Quality Assurance of the Honors Program in BA (Honors) in Humanities and Social Sciences (BAHSS)  – 4-Year Program is maintained by working on: 

Pre- Teaching Sessions at the beginning of every semester.  

Pre-teaching sessions, conducted at the beginning of every semester, serve as vital preparatory sessions aimed at providing students with foundational knowledge and essential skills necessary for success in their upcoming courses. These sessions typically encompass a variety of activities and discussions designed to orient students, set academic expectations, and foster a conducive learning environment.

2. Course Audit every month 

A monthly course audit is a systematic review process conducted to assess the progress and effectiveness of ongoing courses.
