Master’s Program- Organic Chemistry

Chemistry plays a crucial role in innovation and development of sustainable production processes, novel high-tech materials, products in pharmaceutical industry and high-end polymers. Chemical Industry accounts for over half the value of the Indian companies and hence chemistry is vital to the economy.

A Master’s program in Organic Chemistry typically provides students with advanced knowledge in the synthesis, characterization, and analysis of organic compounds. The curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in research, pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, academia, and other industries that rely heavily on organic chemistry. Here’s an outline of what such a program might entail:

  • Advanced Organic Chemistry
  • Synthesis and Characterization
  • Organometallic Chemistry
  • Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry
  • Polymer Chemistry
  • Green Chemistry
  • Computational Chemistry

  • Advanced Knowledge in Organic Chemistry: In-depth study of reaction mechanisms, functional group transformations, and stereochemistry. Focus on modern synthetic methods for organic compounds and advanced analytical techniques (NMR, IR, MS, UV-VIS).
  • Specialized Courses and Research Areas; Specialized topics such as organometallic chemistry, green chemistry, polymer chemistry, and medicinal chemistry. Emphasis on drug design, catalysis, material science, and environmentally sustainable chemistry.
  • Hands-on Laboratory Experience: Extensive lab work where students learn to synthesize organic compounds and analyze them using state-of-the-art techniques.
  • Research Opportunities: Thesis-based program where students undertake original research projects.
  • Interdisciplinary Learning: Collaboration with biochemists, pharmacologists, and chemical engineers in research projects and practical applications.
  • Skill Development: Critical thinking and problem-solving skills in organic synthesis and reaction design. Proficiency in data interpretation from spectroscopy, chromatography, and other analytical tools. Development of strong research and writing skills through research papers and thesis preparation.
  • Industry and Academic Career Preparation: Preparation for careers in pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemical manufacturing, and environmental chemistry. Foundation for pursuing PhD programs in organic chemistry or related fields. Opportunities for internships and networking with industry professionals.

Rooted in a multidisciplinary approach, the master’s degree program curriculum is meticulously structured to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, thereby preparing graduates for diverse career trajectories in academia, industry, and research.

The master’s degree program is divided into a mandatory course, discipline specific electives, and University elective areas. The compulsory area includes, among other things, internships, and 6 months dissertation as a master’s project. In addition, a student must choose university electives from a specified course catalogue. The elective area serves to acquire additional technical, interdisciplinary, and professional skills. Elective modules can be chosen from the entire range of Courses offered across NUV. The program places a strong emphasis on practical training and research, offering laboratory rotations and opportunities to engage in research projects in collaboration with faculty or industry partners. Complementing the academic curriculum is a focus on professional development, including career development workshops and networking events with industry professionals.

The culmination of the MSc in Organic Chemistry is marked by the successful completion of a thesis, wherein, students conduct independent research, demonstrating their ability to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

  • Lectures and Seminars: Deliver fundamental knowledge on complex medicinal and pharmaceutical chemistry concepts
  • Problem-Solving Sessions: Engage students with real-world drug discovery problems to enhance critical thinking.
  • Interdisciplinary Teaching: Involves collaboration with fields such as pharmacology, toxicology, biochemistry, and molecular biology.
  • Hands-On Laboratory Experience: Develops students’ practical skills necessary for drug research and formulation.
  • Clinical and Industrial Exposure: Providing opportunities for students to work in pharmaceutical companies or research laboratories for real-world experience.

4 Semesters | Fee Structure: Rs.42,000/- per semester | Full-time | Two-year | Postgraduate Degree Program|

Navrachana University, a premier university in Vadodara, known for its innovative and forward-looking approaches to education has now implemented a choice-based curriculum for its students. It is aimed at transforming the student learning experience, empowering them to “tailor-make” their own degree.

The need of the hour today is to create highly skilled professionals who possess a broad-based outlook enabling them to collaborate, understand and empathize with larger sociocultural realities.

  • Choice-based curriculum empowers students to choose 10% of course credits of their choice from other domains.
  • The mandatory courses of one domain will become the elective courses in other domains.
  • For instance, a student of Engineering can study Architecture and Design courses and vice versa.

  • Internship Program is an attempt to bridge the gap between academics and the corporate world.
  • Students undertake a 6–8-week full-time internship in reputed chemical and pharmaceutical companies.
  • The internship is scheduled during the intervening period between the close of Semester II and the commencement of Semester III.
  • One complete semester (Semester IV) is dedicated for a dissertation (research project).

Benefits:

  • Exposure to new and exciting areas of the drug development process and understand the molecular basis of diseases.
  • Acquiring technical skills and inculcate aptitude to design experiments, generate data, and communicate research work.
Admission Process
