The Centre for Interdisciplinary Computing Science (CICS) is proposed to drive innovative solutions to real-world challenges through collaborative research, education, and industry partnerships. By uniting expertise from computer science, core engineering, science, and management, CICS will tackle complex problems in domains like Fintech, Healthcare, AI, and other domains.
Philosophy
CICS is founded on the principle that groundbreaking solutions arise from interdisciplinary synergy. By integrating computational expertise with diverse domain knowledge and industry insights, the Centre will deliver practical, scalable, and impactful outcomes. This collaborative ethos ensures solutions are technically robust and aligned with societal and industrial needs.
Objectives
Promote Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Enable faculty from computer science, engineering, science, and management to address real-world challenges through research and consultancy.
Industry-Relevant Research: Partner with industry to solve problem statements in Fintech, Healthcare, AI, and other fields, ensuring practical relevance.
Student Empowerment: Create opportunities for students through internships, research projects, technical assignments, and placements with industry partners.
Educational Innovation: Develop interdisciplinary elective courses to equip students with cross-domain skills for emerging industry needs.
Innovation Hub: Establish CICS as a regional leader in interdisciplinary computing research, consultancy, and talent development.
Research and Consultancy: Assemble interdisciplinary faculty teams to address industry-driven problem statements, starting with couple of projects in healthcare.
Industry Engagement: Collaborate with industry partners to co-create solutions, securing a steady pipeline of problems and funding.
Student Involvement: Provide hands-on experiences via internships, research projects, and technical assignments, aligning academic training with industry demands.
Curriculum Enhancement: Design and offer elective courses blending computing with domain-specific knowledge, expanding as CICS grows.
Outreach and Recognition: Publish research through review, research papers and books, highlight successful projects, and build CICS’s reputation as a problem-solving leader.
Data infrastructure set-up and Data base construction: Crucial for studies that are in the nascent stage such as applied sciences wherein datasets (DNA sequencing, metabolomics, microscopy, histology, cytology etc.) would be constructed, curated and compiled for training.
Expected Outcomes
Research Impact: Deliver solutions to at least three industry problems annually, producing publications and patents.
Student Growth: Engage 50+ (number is aspirational) students yearly in internships, projects, and placements, boosting employability and interdisciplinary expertise.
Industry Success: Enable partners to adopt CICS solutions, fostering sustained consultancy engagements.
Academic Advancement: Introduce 3-5 interdisciplinary elective courses within three years, attracting diverse learners.
Regional Prominence: Position CICS as a hub for interdisciplinary computing, drawing further collaborations and resources.
Collaborative Research Projects: Projects focusing on problem solving for probable translation to the industry/society. Such projects will also be submitted for research grant.
Development of Executive CEP (Continuing Education Program): This course would provide faculties (in-house as well as external) of all levels an opportunity to sharpen their skills for implementing AI in their respective research domain. (Such programs are run at weekends, for 6 months and a certificate is provided at the end of the course. IIT’s, NIT’s QIP program is such an example).
Conclusion
The Centre for Interdisciplinary Computing Science will catalyze innovation by bridging academia and industry. Through collaborative research, student development, and curriculum innovation, CICS will address critical challenges, produce skilled graduates, and emerge as a leader in interdisciplinary excellence.
