Program Details

The School of Science at Navrachana University focuses on in-depth scientific inquiries that delve into theory and push the frontiers of science to shape the future. The programs are designed to bridge the gap between the student’s aspirations and industry expectations. Working in close association with industrial and academic experts, the School offers several unique undergraduate and postgraduate programs in the field of Science, with degrees in BSc. (Chemistry, Microbiology, Physics, Botany, Zoology, Food Science), Integrated BSc.-MSc. (Biomedical Science), and MSc. (Organic Chemistry, Analytical Chemistry, Microbiology, Zoology and Animal Biotechnology, Botany and Plant Biotechnology, Clinical Embryology, Food Science and Dietetics). The high-quality programs are conducted by qualified teachers, along with guest faculty members from the industry, subject experts, and independent researchers. The school also collaborates with industry as well as academia for research and development on real life projects, making students industry ready.

Chemistry plays a crucial role in innovation and development of sustainable production processes, novel high-tech materials, products in pharmaceutical industry and high-end polymers. Chemical Industry accounts for over half the value of the Indian companies and hence chemistry is vital to the economy.

The M.Sc. in Materials Science is a unique two-year inter-disciplinary post graduate program that integrates the field of chemistry, physics and materials engineering. The program will enable students to comprehend the following:

  • principles of design, synthesis and characterization of functional materials.
  • correlation between chemical structure and properties.
  • crystallography and solid-state chemistry
  • electrochemistry, electrochemical materials synthesis
  • surface Science and thin-film technology
  • polymer science and engineering
  • nanoscience, nanomaterials and nanomaterial synthesis
  • semiconductor materials and device physics
  • battery science and energy storage materials
  • flow chemistry and process Intensification
  • biomaterials and sustainable chemistry
  • materials for healthcare and defence applications

Degree: Master of Science-Materials Science

Duration: 4 semesters (Two Year)

Start of study: Autumn Semester 2027-2028

Mandatory Course Credits: 84

Elective Credits: 08

Total Credits: 92

Rooted in a multidisciplinary approach, the master’s degree program curriculum is meticulously structured to seamlessly integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on experience, thereby preparing graduates for diverse career trajectories in academia, industry, and research.

The master’s degree program is divided into a mandatory course, discipline specific electives, and University elective courses. The compulsory courses includes, among other things, industrial internship, and 6 months dissertation as a master’s project. In addition, a student must choose university electives from a specified course catalogue. The discipline elective course serves to equip students with additional technical, interdisciplinary, and professional skills. University elective courses can be chosen from the entire range of courses offered across the University. The program places a strong emphasis on practical training and research and opportunities to engage in research projects in collaboration with faculty or industry partners. Complementing the academic curriculum is a focus on professional development, including career development workshops and networking events with industry professionals.

The culmination of the MSc in Materials Science is marked by the successful completion of a thesis, wherein, students conduct independent research, demonstrating their ability to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of knowledge in the field.

  • Lectures and Seminars: Deliver fundamental knowledge design, synthesis and characterization and applications of functional materials
  • Problem-Solving Sessions: Engage students with real-world problems in the areas of semiconductor, battery, specialty-chemical, polymer and clean-energy industries to enhance critical thinking and inculcate research aptitude
  • Interdisciplinary Teaching: Involves integration of fields such as physics, engineering, chemistry and biology.
  • Hands-On Laboratory Experience: Develops students’ practical skills necessary for materials science research.
  • Industry Exposure: Providing opportunities for students to work in industries or research laboratories for real-world experience.

4 Semesters | Full-time | Two-year | Postgraduate Degree Program

Choice-based Curriculum

Navrachana University, a premier university in Vadodara, known for its innovative and forward-looking approaches to education has now implemented a choice-based curriculum for its students. It is aimed at transforming the student learning experience, empowering them to “tailor-make” their own degree.

The need of the hour today is to create highly skilled professionals who possess a broad-based outlook enabling them to collaborate, understand and empathize with larger sociocultural realities.

  • Choice-based curriculum empowers students to choose 10% of course credits of their choice from other domains.
  • The mandatory courses of one domain will become the elective courses in other domains.
  • For instance, a student of Engineering can study Architecture and Design courses and vice versa.

  • Students undertake a 6–8-week full-time internship in reputed specialty chemicals, polymer manufacturing and advanced materials manufacturing companies.
  • The internship is scheduled during the intervening period between the close of Semester II and the commencement of Semester III.
  • One complete semester (Semester IV) is dedicated for a dissertation (research project).

Benefits:

  • Exposure to new and exciting areas of advanced materials, viz. semiconductors, battery technology, specialty-chemicals, polymers and clean-energy industries.
  • Acquiring technical skills and inculcate research aptitude to design experiments, generate data, and communicate research work.
  • Prepare students for roles like materials scientist, battery chemist, process chemist, and characterization scientist.
