Karan Rane joined Navrachana University in 2023 as an Assistant Professor at the School of Environmental Design and Architecture (SEDA). He is involved in teaching humanities, architectural history and theory, and design studio.

Previously, he has worked full-time at Kamla Raheja Vidyanidhi Institute for Architecture and Environmental Studies (KRVIA), Mumbai, for two-and-a-half years.

He completed his M.Phil., with an interdisciplinary urban studies dissertation, and his M.Arch., with a major in history, theory and criticism, from CEPT University, Ahmedabad.

His interests lie in peri-urbanization in Indian cities, the relationship between capital, the state, and transformation of land in peri-urban areas, and in the relationship between capital and urban development in India.

Apart from higher degrees, he has pursued these research interests by offering directed research projects to undergraduate students of urban design at CEPT University, since 2021.

Karan has presented in person, his solo, original research paper titled ‘Colonial Inspirations, Regional Development: The Case of Baroda State, British India’ at the Society of Architectural Historians of Great Britain’s annual conference ‘Constructing Coloniality: British Imperialism and the Built Environment’, held at The Bartlett School of Architecture, UCL, London, in May 2023.
